Week 2 homework

In the second week we got the homework to access UAL library and find 2 interesting research points for our project. The first one I have found interesting was in “The Journal of Art and Criticism” by Dalie Jamieson, who’s talking about loving nature. I came across it by searching the word ‘nature’, as this is the category I chose from the summer project. What caught my eye was “ Often we understand, interpret, and value other people (and animals, nature, and other entities) instrumentally, only in relation to ourselves. We fail to acknowledge their independent reality and value in the way in which we acknowledge (or even perhaps presuppose) our own. Not only do we neglect their reality, we often relate to others, especially those we claim to love, as extensions of ourselves, even while in some way knowing that they are not.” I think about this a lot, how every single person has their own life, their own reality, and the fact that we’re most likely not even in it, for the people we don’t know, fascinates me. And even for the people we do know, we only think of them in a way where it concerns us, we sometimes forget they have their own lives, experiences, their own friends, family, most of the time, we think of them us ‘my friends’ not as their individual self. Dalie Jamieson then goes on to say how a relationship isn’t quite based on love, rather on how a person loves themselves so much, and the things the other does for them, they don’t feel love, and after some time, after they don’t see their partner the same, the “illusion of love dissolves”, but this is only their opinion.

The second interesting thing i found was in an article named “ Regarding the Pain of Spotmini of what a Robot’s struggle to Learn Reveals About the Built Environment” by Simone C Niquille. I was intrigued by this article because I’ve always been impressed by technology, and in this it was being talked about a robot that I have seen before online, in funny videos, where this 4 legged robot is being annoyed by a human, while only trying to walk. What I have learnt from it is how its builders and the people testing the robot, designed the house where it was tested, and what factors had to be taken into consideration, like the spatial orientation, the pigments from real world. “ As such, these environments are a particular challenge for computer-vision systems, which are reliant on trained standards and a degree of consistency to function.“ and because most of the time, we choose to change many things, it can be quite difficult for these robots to work.
